Through a maze of memories and language, this story guides us to the discovery of the events that brought the main character to his present solitude.
This book tells the story of a prisoner who escaped and found refuge on a lost island. The events that brought him on the island are revealed while the narration unfolds, throughout the whole book. With a masterful writing, the author guides us through a maze of memories: she brings us back to past places like the prisoner’s childhood, that he spent together with his friend Ulina, or to when the twins Mitra and Varuna were born with all their teeth on. Together with the story, the rhythm of the narration is the book’s hypnotic element: it captures the reader with unexpected images and brings us, together with the prisoner, on the road to exhile. The silence of the island brings memories to life and allow us to be part of a story in which time is just one of the elements of the bigger picture.
With this novel, Carol Rodrigues confirms to be one of Brazil’s most original and talented contemporary authors.
