A secret amusement park becomes the headquarters of a fascist colony whose members ignore what’s been going on in the world in the previous two decades. With humor, intelligence and a plentiful imagination, the author reverses the clichés of adventure novels and action movies while reflecting on the ambiguity of nostalgia, the importance of memory and the dangers of nationalism.
In the early 1980s, with Brazil heading towards political openness, an industrialist secretly builds an amusement park. Named Tupinilândia, it would function as a celebration of nationalism and the new democracy that was approaching. However, right before the park’s opening, a group of military personnel invaded the place and took hostage officials and visitors.
Two decades later, an archaeologist obsessed with the myth of Tupinilândia, arrives there with his team and discovers an unpredictable secret: an Orwellian fascist colony in the middle of the park’s attractions devoured by nature. At the head of a troop of young people ignorant of the outside world, which they believe to be dominated by communism, he will attack the representatives of an ideology he thought has disappeared with skills drawn from his addiction to the blockbusters of the 1980s. This novel is a magnificent proof that the pleasure of telling an extraordinary story can be put at the service of current political reflection.
