An irresistible homage to the best crime literature of all times.

It’s 1933, and a German zeppelin leaves Pernambuco directed to Rio de Janeiro.

A few months before, in Germany, a popular agitator that called himself “Führer” had received full powers from the parliament. The world was undergoing an important transformation and the post-war turmoils were opening the way to nationalist, authoritarian and oppressive movements. In the middle of all that, the huge lz 127 Graf Zeppelin was a symbol of the most optimistic and modern aspects of the European culture of the time. Moreover, it was the only possible alternative to crossing the Atlantic by sea.

The trip on the zeppelin had nothing to envy to those on cruise ships and luxury trains, such as the Orient Express, and its passengers were businessmen, doctors, heirs of rich families, and all those who could face the extremely high prices of the trip. Everything on board had been prepared for the enjoyment of its rich passengers. Everything, except for a terrible murder that took place in the middle of one apparently silent night. Now on board there were a policeman and a murderer on the run, and everybody — the eugenicist doctor, the art critic, the baroness — could be a suspect.

Taking inspiration from classics of crime literature such as Agatha Christie’s and Arthur Conan Doyle’s works, Samir Machado de Machado pays homage to the genre through a plot that unites a mysterious baroness, communist spies and undercover photographers, to the ascent of the Third Reich and the persecution of gay people in 1930’s Berlin. And together with all of that, The crime of the good nazi provides a view on contemporary Brazil, showing how some important issues have lasted through the decades and have become part of contemporary societies.

This mixture of mystery, history and social criticism makes this novel an extraordinary example of contemporary literature, seen through the ironical look of someone that has found the connection between the past and today’s world. Inside the Graf Zeppelin, Samir Machado de Machado develops a human drama able to capture both the world’s big changes and the small events that affect our lives.
