The victims are couples that are killed in front of their children. William, a child psychologist, is called to help with the investigations. During the investigation, he will get in touch with the killer and remain involved in a deep net of psychological tricks that will have him face great moral issues on his behavior as a person and as a professional.

The film rights of O sorriso da hiena were acquired by TV Globo for a TV adaptation of the novel.

Gustavo Ávila is a Brazilian writer and advertising agent. He is the author of O sorriso da hiena (2017) and Quando a luz apaga (2019), both starring detective Artur Veiga. In 2015 he published the short story Pá de Cal. In 2016 TV Globo acquired the film rights of O sorriso da hiena for a TV adaptation of the story.
