Micheliny Verunschk’s Trilogia Infernal is the collection of her three novels set between the years of Brazil’s military dictatorship and today. These three works describe a multi-leveled picture that explores how the power dynamics of society affect the lives of people, while portraying a Brazil broken in two.

The story begins when Laura, daughter of a policeman who she calls “the Sheriff”. One day her father brings home a kid around her age, and ties him to one of the kitchen’s pillars. They all (Laura, her step mom and step sisters) are forbidden from talking to him, but Laura, somehow, manages to. The kid is at their house after having killed several people, and Laura wants to discover what happened.
From this moment on, we follow the diverse story of the two kids. The first book focuses on Laura’s point of view, the second focuses on the other kid, Cristoval, and on what happened to him before he was taken by Laura’s father, while the third focuses on Laura as a grown woman who tries to dig deeper in the events of the years of her childhood, both inside and outside of her family.
Verunschk builds a narration that, while guiding us through the events of the characters lives explores the effect on what was happening in society on the behaviour of the kids and of the adults around them. After unveiling the facts, in the third novel of the trilogy she finally finds the way to reconstruct everything, give a meaning to what happened and, through the explanation of the facts – in contrast with their covering-up – finds a way to move on. As she moves on, Brazil too can move forward.

The three novels that form the Infernal Trilogy are Aqui, no coração do inferno (2015), O peso do coração de um homem (2017), O amor, esse obstaculo (2019).
